Bernese Mountain

Commonly known as Berners and hailing from the high swiss mountains, the Bernese Mountain dog was formerly a working dog. This dog breed was initially developed to pull carts, herd cattle and also act as watchdogs. They are widely known for their loyalty and the high amount of energy they have.

The Bernese Mountain Dog worked on Swiss farms for over a thousand years, herding cattle and providing companionship. As agriculture declined around 1888, breeders formed the “Berna” club to preserve the breed. Post-World War I, Berners were exported to Holland, the U.S., and England, where the first English litter was born in 1936. Despite interruptions during World War II, breeding resumed, and the Bernese Mountain Dog is now a recognized AKC member

Berners are intelligent, affectionate dogs that thrive in family settings. While protective of their territory, they are typically shy rather than aggressive with strangers. Early socialization with people and animals is crucial to help them grow into well-rounded adults.
