History
The Akita has a long history in Japan, and is considered to be one of the country's national treasures. They were companions and guards for the Shogun, the imperial leaders of the country. Akitas were bred for guard duty, hunting, and herding. They are best known for their ability to take down the Yezo bear. The Akita first arrived in the US in 1937 as a gift to Helen Keller.
